Choosing variegated sashiko thread
Variegated thread changes colour along its length. The visible result depends on the exact colourway, stitch path and joins, so a wound skein cannot predict a whole stitched pattern.

Lay out a loose length
Observe its colour changes before cutting. Keep this as a description of that sample, not a promise about every skein.
Stitch the intended path
Use the same cloth and stitch spacing you plan for the project. Check how the colours fall at a corner, join or repeated row.
Do not force the colour into the stitch
Changing tension to expose a preferred colour can distort the cloth. If a particular sequence matters, plan and sample the cut lengths and joins. Record the colour sequence and care result for the actual thread you use.
