Match a sashiko needle eye to your thread
The eye must carry your thread without scraping, while the shaft and point must suit the cloth. A large eye does not, by itself, tell you how wide a hole the needle will make: look at the whole needle profile and test the actual fabric.

Use a maker-listed pairing first
For the DARUMA long pack, the maker lists the 60 mm needle for both Thin and Thick sashiko thread; the 54 mm and 66.7 mm needles are listed for Thin. All three shafts are 0.97 mm. These are DARUMA’s named pairings, not a universal conversion chart for every brand.

Check without touching a sharp edge
Inspect under good light
Look for a bent shaft, damaged point, corrosion or an irregular eye.
Pass a fresh length
If the thread repeatedly catches, try a known compatible undamaged needle. Do not scrape the point or eye across your skin.
Stitch a short scrap
Check the cloth for pulled holes and the thread for fresh fraying. Retire any damaged needle securely rather than saving it for rougher fabric.
