Read the packaging before washing
“Pre-printed” does not guarantee that every design uses the same ink or removal method. Keep the label until the project is finished and follow its temperature, detergent and handling directions.
If you added your own marker or transfer paper, check those instructions as well. A project can contain both the manufacturer design and separate marks made during cutting or assembly.
Complete the stitching first
Do not pre-wash a cloth whose pattern is meant to dissolve in water. Finish the stitched area while the guides remain clear. Check the back, secure the thread and loosen any visibly tight sections before wetting the cloth.
Rinse gently and postpone heat
Use the water temperature and washing method stated by the manufacturer. Move the cloth gently through the water rather than scrubbing the stitches. Refresh the water if colour or printed residue remains, then rinse thoroughly.
Do not iron over temporary marks. Some fabric-marking guidance specifically warns that heat can make removal more difficult. Wait until the guide has disappeared, reshape the damp cloth without stretching it and dry it flat or as directed.
If a line remains
Repeat the manufacturer-approved rinse rather than immediately using stain remover, bleach or high heat. Test any additional treatment on an inconspicuous area and consider the fibre, dye and metallic content of the thread before changing products.
