Use a secure holder
A pincushion, needle case or magnetic holder keeps points contained between sessions. Avoid leaving needles in the cloth, on the table or loose in a bag.
If you carry a project, close the needle case before putting it beside scissors and thread. Movement can push a loose point through fabric or a pouch.
Separate by condition
Keep new, active and retired needles in separate areas. A needle that worked on denim may be blunt or rough enough to damage delicate cloth.
Label sizes or lengths if the case holds several similar needles. A small note prevents guesswork and reduces the temptation to test a point against your finger.
Inspect before every session
Check the point, shaft and eye under good light. Discard or isolate any needle with a burr, bend, rust or roughness that could catch the thread.
Use a small container for damaged needles before disposal. Never put a loose sharp tool straight into household waste or the bottom of a fabric bin.
