Beginner sashiko supplies: what to buy first
For a first practice row, you need suitable cloth, one thread, a compatible needle and scissors. You can use cloth and scissors you already own. Add marking supplies only if you are drawing a design.

Check a kit against the actual contents
Our Bundles collection currently contains thread multipacks and wool sets. It is not a complete beginner kit containing cloth, thread, needles and instructions. Needle-and-thimble sets are also exactly those listed tools; they do not include every item in the list above.
Make the setup work before adding more
Use a plain scrap
Keep it large enough to hold comfortably. If you choose a printed sampler elsewhere, follow its preparation instructions instead.
Try the thread and needle together
Use a maker-listed pairing and check that both pass through the cloth without forcing.
Stitch one short row
Smooth the cloth and inspect both sides. Change one part of the setup only if the sample reveals a specific difficulty.
Add tools for a real need
A threader may help you start; a suitable thimble may support your needle-pushing method. Neither fixes a bent needle or incompatible eye. Choose extra colours after one workable sample, and keep the maker and shade labels for reordering.
