The essential four
Start with cloth, thread, a suitable needle and scissors. A pre-printed sampler removes the need for a marking tool on the first project. Choose a thread colour with enough contrast to see the stitches clearly while you work.
- One small pre-printed sashiko cloth or sampler
- One purpose-made cotton sashiko thread
- A general sashiko needle or mixed-length needle pack
- Small sharp thread scissors
Useful additions, when the project needs them
A sashiko thimble helps when using a longer needle to load repeated stitches. Transfer paper, washable markers and rulers matter when drawing your own design. A needle threader is useful with a compact eye or for anyone who finds threading difficult.
An embroidery hoop is not automatically essential. Many sashiko stitchers hold the fabric in the hand so it can be gathered onto the needle and smoothed after each pass.
What makes a good beginner bundle
A useful bundle explains exactly what is included, matches the needle to the supplied thread and provides enough thread for the cloth. It should also state whether the pattern washes out and identify any additional items you still need.
Avoid choosing only by the largest item count. A smaller bundle of compatible materials is more useful than a box of tools that do not suit the first project.
