How to prepare a sashiko thread skein
First check whether you want one continuous thread or a bundle of ready-cut working lengths. Cutting through the whole loop makes many shorter lengths; it cannot be undone. Read the instructions for the actual skein before using scissors.

Keep the label
Record maker, range, shade and original length. Keep it with the opened thread.
Open the skein into its natural loop
Lay it on a clear surface and identify the ties and joined ends without pulling an arbitrary strand from the middle.
Choose the preparation method
Use the maker’s method if you want a prepared bundle. If you need a continuous length for your project, do not cut through the full loop.
Understand the DARUMA prepared-bundle method
DARUMA illustrates securing the loop opposite the tied/joined part with the label, then cutting through the bundle at the tied part. Individual working lengths can then be drawn from the labelled side. Use the maker’s own diagram for the exact placement; do not apply that whole-loop cut automatically to every pack.
Pull one length and store the rest
Draw a single prepared length gently rather than pulling several together. If it catches, stop and straighten the bundle instead of tightening a tangle. Store the remaining prepared thread with its label and note how you cut it.
A card may be simpler for individual lengths
If you want to choose each working length as you go, a thread card is another format to consider. Choose the same named thread weight deliberately; a 30 m Thick card and 40 m Thin card contain different threads.
