Inspect before cutting
Find the manufacturer’s ties or wraps and note the colour and length. Do not pull a random strand from the middle because it can tighten the rest of the skein.
If the skein has become compressed, loosen it gently on a clean surface. Keep the bundle aligned rather than brushing or combing it aggressively.
Choose a working length
Cut a length that you can pull through the cloth without repeatedly dragging the thread across the work. Shorter lengths are often easier for a beginner and reduce tangling.
For a large repeated pattern, mark the same approximate length each time. Consistent lengths make it easier to judge how much thread remains and where a join will fall.
Store the remainder clearly
Keep the unused skein in a labelled bag or on a thread card, away from dust and sharp tools. Record any altered length so the next session starts without guesswork.
If the thread becomes fluffy or kinked, stop and reset it before stitching. A calm, aligned strand is easier to control than one pulled tight from a tangled centre.
