Sashiko thread calculator
Estimate a planning range, account for your stash or use a measured swatch to refine it.
Thread estimate
2.38 m–2.62 mPlanning range, including up to 10% extra. Based on straight rows; check with a small swatch.
- Per colour, with allowance
- 1.31 m
- Additional after your stash
- 2.62 m
Yellow marks show front stitches. Dashes show the reverse path; black end marks show tails. This is a guide to the entered grid.
How your estimate is worked out
- Front path
- 1.37 m
- Reverse path
- 0.91 m
- Tails
- 0.1 m
- Extra allowance
- 0.24 m
- Whole packs per colour
- 1
Grid planning assumes 19 straight rows across 120 mm, a 3 mm stitch and a 2 mm gap, repeated for 1 pass. The low estimate is the modelled front path, reverse gaps and 50 mm tails at each end of 1 start. 1 cloth layer are recorded; thickness and needle travel need a matched swatch and are not assigned an invented multiplier. The high estimate adds the declared 10% waste allowance to the low estimate. Stash is treated as evenly available across 2 colours; whole packs use the supplied 20 m pack length.

Bring your project to cloth
Compare the pack length with your estimate for each colour. Use your existing thread first and check the weight suits your cloth.
A shorter thread format to compare for a small project or colour trial.
Compare the larger format with your calculated requirement and existing stash.
A larger fine thread format; check the named range and measured requirement.
A larger thick thread format; test its weight on your cloth first.

How do I print at the right size?
Choose A4 or US Letter, download the PDF and print at 100% or actual size. Turn off “fit to page”. Measure the 50 mm check with a ruler before you transfer anything to cloth. Larger designs include numbered tiles and an assembly overview.
Can I use my own materials?
Yes. Every tool and download is free to use with materials you already have. Shop suggestions are optional. Test your thread, needle and any marking method on a small piece of the actual cloth first.
