Denim can handle a confident thread line, but it also creates more resistance than lightweight sashiko cloth. A good thread choice supports the repair without making the garment rigid or difficult to sew.

Match weight to the denim
Heavy denim can visually carry a thicker thread, while lightweight or worn denim may need a finer line. Push a short sample through the layers before deciding.
The right thread should travel without excessive force. If the needle repeatedly drags or the cloth puckers around every stitch, reduce the thread weight or simplify the layers.
Choose contrast with wear in mind
White on blue is clear and traditional-looking, while muted blue, grey or natural shades make a quieter repair. Place the thread on the washed denim because new and faded areas can differ.
A strong contrast can make a well-planned repair look intentional, but it also shows irregular tension. Make a short swatch if you are still building confidence in even stitches.
Leave room for movement
A denim knee, seat or elbow needs to bend. Use a patch that reaches stable cloth and thread that reinforces the area without packing every hole with dense stitches.
After the first section, flex the garment and check the reverse. If the repair feels board-like, widen the spacing or change the patch shape before continuing.
